In 2021, Akuhata Patrick Stephen Bailey-Winiata completed Master of Science (Research) research at University of Waikato titled “Understanding the potential exposure of coastal marae and urupā in Aotearoa New Zealand to sea level rise”. The study examined potential sea-level-rise exposure for coastal marae and urupā, including a Bay of Plenty case study, and discussed local geomorphology and cultural responsibilities.
