Gavin Kenny has worked professionally on climate change for more than thirty years. His interests include adaptation, farming communities and resilience at catchment scale. His account of the Adapting to Climate Change in Eastern New Zealand project describes engagement with farmers and a recommendation to treat community and water-catchment resilience together.
Gavin Kenny contributed to CLIMPACTS research, linking climate scenarios with sector assessment at national, regional and site scales.
CLIMPACTS, developed from 1993 with Richard Warrick and Gavin Kenny among its researchers, brought NIWA, AgResearch, Crop & Food Research, HortResearch, Landcare Research and university researchers into a common climate-impact assessment programme. Its national and regional work combined climate information with sector models to examine spatial changes in agricultural and horticultural suitability. That was a different model from QMAP or a corporate GIS: specialist science remained distributed across organisations, while a shared spatial framework allowed the components to be analysed together.
