In 2015 Grant Lawrence's Auckland University of Technology thesis used low-altitude unmanned aerial imagery at Whatipu Scientific Reserve as part of a project classifying coastal wetland vegetation and investigating change. The study combined high-resolution satellite imagery with UAS imagery whose ground detail was about six centimetres. The small aircraft supplied local observations that could complement rather than replace the broader satellite view.
