R. D. Williams wrote the LADEDA Plotting Handbook, published by the Hydrology Centre in May 1982. With P. R. van Berkel, Williams then described LADEDA as a geographic information system in a 1985 New Zealand Geographer paper. These publications document technical writing and system development within the government land-resource programme.
P. R. van Berkel and R. D. Williams published “Introduction to LADEDA: a Geographic Information System” in the New Zealand Geographer. The authors used the term GIS in 1985. That year the University of Auckland Geography Department was teaching a senior undergraduate GIS course, while DSIR’s Science Mapping Unit was beginning to use an Intergraph GIS.
