Steve Abley entered the workforce in 1988 and gained an engineering technology qualification through practical work and extramural study before completing an honours civil-engineering degree at Canterbury. He worked for consultants and constructors in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He became a fellow of Engineering New Zealand in 2011 and received its MacLean Citation in 2015. His leadership at Abley combines transport engineering, spatial technology and consultancy management.
