Duane Wilkins’s work spans health, conservation, policing and land information. At the Department of Conservation he managed GIS and later returned to lead the regional shared-service team formed in 2012. At LINZ he worked in geospatial capability building, including Ngā Poutama Matawhenua, the practical Māori GIS mapping wānanga. In 2020 he was seconded to the COVID-19 Operations Command Centre and developed a support website and mapping tools for Māori and Pacific communities and NGOs. In 2021 he led the Police ArcGIS Enterprise implementation team.
Duane Wilkins recalls that Eagle Technology designed DOCgis before 2003, with departmental analysts and developers continuing its development. He also recalls difficult relations between regional teams and the GIS manager. Around a decade later, Wilkins returned to lead GIS; in 2012 the team became a shared service for the regions, a change he remembers as highly successful.
