Our Environment launched in December 2011 as a Landcare Research land atlas. It let people inspect and query environmental datasets, obtain explanations and create maps or reports without desktop GIS software. Subjects included land-use capability, vegetation, erosion and ecosystems.
The Informatics team developed it alongside S-map Online, while LRIS supplied downloadable data for users undertaking their own GIS work. David Medyckyj-Scott recalls the national basemaps as possibly the first derived from LINZ’s 1:50,000 vector data. Published accounts document their development; the claim of priority remains attributed to him.
